A Miscarriage of Justice
We are oftentimes made aware of news stories about the false imprisonment of innocent individuals -- once they are freed after decades behind bars. Still, appeals and releases are few and far between, while innocent citizens and their families are suffering the loss of a magnitude we can only imagine.
According to the Registry of Exonerations releases in the U.S. for 2017 totaled 139; with only 1 in Florida (0.72% of total). Total exonerations from 1989 through June 2018 total 2,240; with a mere 70 in Florida (3.125% of total). Some good news is that Non-DNA exonerations have increased in 27 years; from a total of 28 in 1990 to 125 in 2017; while DNA exonerations have only increased from 1 in 1990 to a total of 17 in 2017.
With the advancement of various methods of proof such as DNA evidence, and Non-DNA evidence like cyber forensics, the tables have turned. That said, it is not often we are allowed a window into an actual case of flagrant injustice; to actually have the chance to view an expert examination of fraudulent statements that also clearly outline the motive of the plaintiff.

Here we have such a case, that of retired U.S. Senior Navy Chief Kevin Watkins -- a veteran of 21 years of active service for our country. Just prior to retiring, Kevin had planned on working full-time in the Coast Guard. Instead, he was the victim of a malicious plan to steal his pension, isolate him from his children, and the criminal identity theft of his IRS returns and refunds. In prison since March 3, 2009, the evidence that could free him is in process in federal court while Florida refuses to extend the evidentiary hearing date.
